This past year has been a little crazy. Planning (and going) a six week hiking trip to Spain. Ending up having to go by myself due to my friend getting into a terrible car accident. Also, doing a Spartan Race. There has been NO time for blogging!<br />
<br />
My trip was wonderful! I didn't want to come home. You can see everything at <a href="http://fromteachertopilgrim.blogspot.com/">fromteachertopilgrim.blogspot.com</a>. I am already semi planning my next trip to Italy.<br />
<br />
Well...school is in fully swing! We have been back for over two weeks, and it seems a little strange to be working instead of walking in Spain. My class is great...just a little talkative, but nothing that I can't handle. My classroom is the biggest I have ever had--each of us has 25 to 26 kids (there are 5 of us). It is a challenge, but we're making it.<br />
<br />
The biggest challenge is addition and subtraction right now. Our kids we have now didn't get into 2 digit numbers until late in the year (our math program isn't the best at pacing). After spending a lot of time with these skills over the past two weeks, we gave our first math test. Subtraction is still a weakness. So, I am sending their math tests home to correct. Along with the tests, I provided my parents with links to videos that explain how to add and subtract using the strategies used in the classroom. I thought that I would share them with everyone. Maybe you can use them to help explain math strategies to your parents. Just please forgive the cheesiness....it was a long day "in the office".<br />

YAY! I love weeks were I am able to plan fun, creative things for my lovelies to do in order to express their learning. That is really a weakness for me....creativity.<br />
<br />
This week we have been learning how animals get energy, this includes food chains. We created our own food chains from an ecosystem of our choice on styrofoam cups. Most of my students chose the forest or savannah. We used the cups to make a mobile.<br />
<br />
First, I poked holes at the top of the cup. I gave everyone 4 cups to create their mobile.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyAetl6DRJQUUYZ8bIQrF9onvP0kW3BkIt-56vL5PgBLkA0nVWXrUwOYAeEvzKnPvN_LQJCQBnP0XJ8WhyphenhyphenNJwL9JMosWrt3_aAz_Voe9N9mvAio9MdCsK0aCWJNkVjn7cZlDiq-_EVpu0/s1600/IMG438.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyAetl6DRJQUUYZ8bIQrF9onvP0kW3BkIt-56vL5PgBLkA0nVWXrUwOYAeEvzKnPvN_LQJCQBnP0XJ8WhyphenhyphenNJwL9JMosWrt3_aAz_Voe9N9mvAio9MdCsK0aCWJNkVjn7cZlDiq-_EVpu0/s320/IMG438.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The students wrote the names of their animals and plants with a pen. I tried using a crayon and marker, but neither one of them would write on the cup. The students then drew their animals on a piece of paper. Then they cut them out in order to glue them onto the cups. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrOebos5sJktpUq4JXg79OV9efGAL1rcBZnCzg0hNXwNoK6OombAzVV5c3ZPwaIWqgz-xtdEO80IOC3en59WQc9O7nTVknhbFh-WQd9ROHBVAHziBpwN3udzba6-8Qjxn86zNtAH_ld1I/s1600/IMG436.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrOebos5sJktpUq4JXg79OV9efGAL1rcBZnCzg0hNXwNoK6OombAzVV5c3ZPwaIWqgz-xtdEO80IOC3en59WQc9O7nTVknhbFh-WQd9ROHBVAHziBpwN3udzba6-8Qjxn86zNtAH_ld1I/s320/IMG436.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I strung the cups together with string. <br />

<br />
<br />
Here is our finished product. A couple of my students said that it looks like snow falling from the ceiling. Ha ha ha. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh91zfsTAomQ75JmkhxGV9nnE0cHMJK57ePYjT-fp1i58t3uojyvmrw5TFEMKq_6CaVU_3CJsePZzJ5I7ACYHpmWYETG6TakA5OggeJWseyXD97iS_8395GBKXoMVpG-DllWVG1aFStCkw/s1600/IMG445.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh91zfsTAomQ75JmkhxGV9nnE0cHMJK57ePYjT-fp1i58t3uojyvmrw5TFEMKq_6CaVU_3CJsePZzJ5I7ACYHpmWYETG6TakA5OggeJWseyXD97iS_8395GBKXoMVpG-DllWVG1aFStCkw/s320/IMG445.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3ktww1VPanL3b8uaMzMbG1kmSZymmxcHX0FFyWOBSUPHhBaXL3rEuJgMbpU02_5TPAVr8C7MDSTNWNbSaLj7sMmQN1O57ySU5uvofNdvxGZGSjLsDrVqwmiJj_kX-cC1HCx02LuGNVtM/s1600/IMG437.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3ktww1VPanL3b8uaMzMbG1kmSZymmxcHX0FFyWOBSUPHhBaXL3rEuJgMbpU02_5TPAVr8C7MDSTNWNbSaLj7sMmQN1O57ySU5uvofNdvxGZGSjLsDrVqwmiJj_kX-cC1HCx02LuGNVtM/s320/IMG437.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
We are starting our poetry week in our reading series. There were some difficult words for them to understand without a little help. So, we talked about the words "alliteration" and "personification" through examples. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlYj8p4CDUCDAOm25ZUOkUGUoHWmfdT4CtjOsaXMnczE5_vaVxy5-DxjuHBsE808TaameVViKkZ9z2WhCZs4IwZljUtDdX3Xka6G8PB0AM81yBK9PQHVDMV0i0Gr2x671AdMasyT5TIek/s1600/IMG442.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlYj8p4CDUCDAOm25ZUOkUGUoHWmfdT4CtjOsaXMnczE5_vaVxy5-DxjuHBsE808TaameVViKkZ9z2WhCZs4IwZljUtDdX3Xka6G8PB0AM81yBK9PQHVDMV0i0Gr2x671AdMasyT5TIek/s320/IMG442.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
After that I had the students create their own alliterations and personifications. They had a blast! Their favorite part was creating personification examples.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So here is my truth about becoming a teacher....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9v8GoM3rlspznoNNkJS9-FThGMZZbXsxGIs1vjxuwHZITF9mOrA-i69jqGXP7kFFxA826a4JgrcChnpLDUWWGxeGiUKG7xqEjw11m1RUjXKtqsuiEBvM4PcQKYYr94W8759dctwrXXxk/s1600/MyTruthTeaching1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9v8GoM3rlspznoNNkJS9-FThGMZZbXsxGIs1vjxuwHZITF9mOrA-i69jqGXP7kFFxA826a4JgrcChnpLDUWWGxeGiUKG7xqEjw11m1RUjXKtqsuiEBvM4PcQKYYr94W8759dctwrXXxk/s640/MyTruthTeaching1.png" width="430" /></a></div>
<br />
It's amazing how the direction of the Lord can change your life. Growing up in a home that wasn't the best, I was led to help those students that have similar situations from my childhood. So many teachers are tired of all the paper work, nagging parents, and unsupportive principals; but I can't think of anything else to do with my life. I know that I am not a miracle worker, and there are days when I get irrigated by parents and principals; however, I remember that I am here for my students, giving them things that they might not get at home. There are years when parents thank me for the things that I have done for their children, and there are years that are from "you know where", but the God has given me a mission that I cannot abandon. My mission is to show my students the love of Christ even when they don't get the love they desire at home. <br />

It's just not cold out yet. I mean it's cool, but it's not cold enough to have the heat on or warm enough for the A/C. This means that I turn on my gas heater just to help knock off the chill in the room. It's such a lovely thing to have!</div>

<b>Loving</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I bought new running shoes to help prepare me for my Spartan Race in March, and they are WONDERFUL! My feet don't hurt and there is a lot of support. </div>

Now that Day Light Savings Time is here, my body has to adjust to the time change. It just seems so late!! My body is trying to tell me that it's time to get into bed, ha ha.</div>

<b>Wanting</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I taught a good friend of mine how to make REAL Italian cannolis this weekend. They are one of my favorite desserts. Well, since the shells contain gluten I can't have any. So sad!! I was going to set some filling aside for myself, but she used a wooden spoon that had gluten on it.....rats!!! Now I am on a mission to make gluten free cannoli shells.</div>

I just need to be on my big vacation. I haven't been on a vacation in YEARS! It's time to get out of the country for a while. Come on May 25th!!!!</div>

I love taco salads, but this one is on the lighter side. It doesn't have meat! What?? Then how can it be good?? Well, the beans are seasoned with the taco seasoning and is a GREAT meat replacer. You can eat a whole bunch and not feel guilty. </div>

<br />
I booked my plane tickets for my trip to Europe! I'm just so excited about this trip even if I am <strong>walking</strong> 500 miles while I'm gone. I am even taking off the last week of school in order to go! Crazy, I know!<br />
<br />
Here is a link to my blog about the El Camino/The Way (you may have seen the movie with Martin Sheen):<br />

I can't believe that it's the 2nd nine weeks already!! Before I know it, I will be driving back to Michigan to see my family for Christmas. My kids are pretty shocked too. We were getting ready to do an assignment and I told them that they are about 1/2 way done with 3rd grade--I almost had to pick up their jaws off the floor they were so surprised. <br />
<br />
We just started our geometry unit in Math Investigations this week, and I am very pleased in how well everyone is doing. Who doesn't like to use a ruler to measure things?? Ha ha.<br />
<br />
While on Pinterest, I found this cute song to help my students remember what a perimeter is, and not to confuse it with area. The "Perimeter Song" is to the tune of "Farmer and the Dell". In addition, we created an anchor chart together to show how to find the perimeter of shapes. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLJGF2wN9290JzaWm25HmJ2O-xM1l0QoAsNZ2yjXjfLHvDJlDjUtq6ndDLcrs2MeNSMGEZ3iXjpvb4pfdJb-pjuhqNzLTr0hoXDYkmpxhJ9QP3F41D3aoox_kIQ0Iz63Ch5S6f5Lj5igg/s1600/IMG420.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLJGF2wN9290JzaWm25HmJ2O-xM1l0QoAsNZ2yjXjfLHvDJlDjUtq6ndDLcrs2MeNSMGEZ3iXjpvb4pfdJb-pjuhqNzLTr0hoXDYkmpxhJ9QP3F41D3aoox_kIQ0Iz63Ch5S6f5Lj5igg/s320/IMG420.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1bM6rQeuqy6TQZYLBNO0jXRZ4SE3oAbQ55fVo9nJxksYaFgtBzmFps3b3AfAGWQ4SPrDg4y0ZlE2JXbS3d0i5HP6KIjpL75hQ5S10PRUMMjZ6YuD-2ph9teGmlsK3QKz1yC5xVDaSrk8/s1600/IMG419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1bM6rQeuqy6TQZYLBNO0jXRZ4SE3oAbQ55fVo9nJxksYaFgtBzmFps3b3AfAGWQ4SPrDg4y0ZlE2JXbS3d0i5HP6KIjpL75hQ5S10PRUMMjZ6YuD-2ph9teGmlsK3QKz1yC5xVDaSrk8/s320/IMG419.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
One of the lessons was an assessment on perimeter. They were to measure large shapes on the floor that were created out of tape. Since I really didn't want to put tape on my floor in order to create various shapes for the kiddos to measure, I put the shapes on chart paper. I was a perfect solution!! Also, the kids only had to give their group members a "check mark" on a rubric. I didn't like that either. I mean, if this is going to be an assessment (even an informal one) then I want to know that they are able to do the work in order to find the perimeter. I created another solution. Instead of use that stupid rubric, I made their chart paper a consensus map. The shape was in the middle and there was workspace marked off for each group member. Once they found the perimeter and agreed then they would write the perimeter in the middle of the shape. It worked out great!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi573s8W9Y_n5J9RIdsryKwotKOCyY6vW8xSm2TiOPKEHw6OXDDMt-EBUQi2WGKwKSV9VWT_84TmPRcGE7lcCWE8vxUHCHooQ2U1STGFVQVPct3zkV__6bunwmoeTdOlYov0A_n9aUmT1g/s1600/IMG413.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi573s8W9Y_n5J9RIdsryKwotKOCyY6vW8xSm2TiOPKEHw6OXDDMt-EBUQi2WGKwKSV9VWT_84TmPRcGE7lcCWE8vxUHCHooQ2U1STGFVQVPct3zkV__6bunwmoeTdOlYov0A_n9aUmT1g/s320/IMG413.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Once everyone was in a group, we talked out the rules:<br />
1-EVERYONE had to measure each side. This is a way to double check out work.<br />
2-Use the edge of the ruler to measure the edges of each side. <br />
3-Write down each measurement.<br />
4-EVERYONE is to find the perimeter in their own space.<br />
5-Write the perimeter in the middle of the shape once everyone agrees.<br />
<br />

Our principal had us go to a 6 day rotation instead of a 5 day rotation. This had prooven to be helpful beyond measure. It gave us time to dig deep into stories and skills. Oh yeah, an to do stations! Whoot! Whoot! <br />
<br />
The last six days were all about main idea. Most of our stories were nonfiction (50% of our text has to be nonfiction according to the Common Core) which was great for main idea. With the last story before testing, my students were completed a consensus map for main idea.<br />
<br />
I grouped everyone into groups of 4 and gave them a piece of chart paper with the main idea that the class agreed upon in the middle. The chart paper was then divided into 4 sections. Each person had to give details (we call it evidence) supporting the main idea. After everyone was finished, they had to come to a consensus about the details written on the chart paper. Once everyone agreed, they would each sign the paper in the middle. <br />
<br />
This went better than I could have imagined! They were truly digging. This helped them on their reading test too!<br />
<br />
Here are some pictures of our little project:<br />
<a href="http://nerdyturningthirty.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/wpid-img394.jpg"><img alt="image" class="alignnone size-full" height="453" originalw="604" scale="1.5" src-orig="http://nerdyturningthirty.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/wpid-img394.jpg?w=604" src="http://nerdyturningthirty.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/wpid-img394.jpg?w=906" title="IMG394.jpg" width="604" /></a><br />

<br />
This brings me to our analytical writing ….<br />
<br />
In the Common Core, students have to construction analytical writing pieces (answering questions using text evidence) to prove they read. This the first year to write this deeply; therefore, I had to do a lot of modeling on using text evidence.<br />
<br />
<br />
I found it helpful to create a “show your evidence” wall with sentence stems for showing text evidence.<br /><a href="http://nerdyturningthirty.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/wpid-img398.jpg"><img alt="image" class="alignnone size-full" height="640" originalw="604" scale="1.5" src="http://nerdyturningthirty.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/wpid-img398.jpg?w=604" title="IMG398.jpg" width="480" /></a><br /> Here is the guidelines that we set for our writing. <br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://nerdyturningthirty.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/wpid-img395.jpg"><img alt="image" class="alignnone size-full" originalw="604" scale="1.5" src="http://nerdyturningthirty.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/wpid-img395.jpg?w=604" title="IMG395.jpg" /></a><br /> This is the piece I modeled.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://nerdyturningthirty.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/wpid-img397.jpg"><img alt="image" class="alignnone size-full" height="640" originalw="604" scale="1.5" src="http://nerdyturningthirty.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/wpid-img397.jpg?w=604" title="IMG397.jpg" width="480" /></a><br /> This is the piece we wrote together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1pVa2XJodRJl0-xupn2xVe4nDKHZcOxtA8KdM79DRXJhrLU09LxBBcnnPYM1bCEBY-pssiQSjwRuTfr1tvUJAMJyEagZK60lrxlRNzc0ZHD-JHajpJofTvLnsz28RbK_m0XpgCebP0qY/s1600/IMG399.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
<br />
They wrote a piece on their own too, and took it home to show their parents about text evidence.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Reading is just a way for me to escape the real world even if it's for a little while. There are many favorites tucked away on my book shelves, but my all time favorite genre is classic literature. No one writes stories like <em>Pride and Prejudice</em>, <em>Tale of Two Cities</em>, or <em>Great Expectations </em>(just to name a few) anymore. There are so many layers to these stories which make them timeless pieces. <br />
<br />
Right now I am reading <em>Moby Dick</em>. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju0BO0Wtu5hfBBUVg7l11D85LpZu25FRKegkE0eZqulfD6Ym6ESah1ECbCEAA9RxJ5Ykk4CYpkaD39g1LNGepL__t60dXAXh3inTdUACgbanFLSIwzWtnlMgvI1bpa9PxioOBHt8r0-aw/s1600/herman.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju0BO0Wtu5hfBBUVg7l11D85LpZu25FRKegkE0eZqulfD6Ym6ESah1ECbCEAA9RxJ5Ykk4CYpkaD39g1LNGepL__t60dXAXh3inTdUACgbanFLSIwzWtnlMgvI1bpa9PxioOBHt8r0-aw/s320/herman.jpg" width="187" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This is a fantastic book! I may only be about 1/4 way into it, but I can already tell that I am getting lost in the story of Capitan Ahab! The way Melville uses the English language to form his story is just amazing. Why doesn't anyone speak or right like this anymore?!?!?! It's so beautiful. <br />
<br />
This world is full of people that want everything handed to them. They don't want to think and discover. The plainer the speak and writing the better. <br />
<br />
Okay...enough of my soap box.....<br />
<br />

This difficult for the little guys right now since they are not used to having use text evidence. With the help of a team member, we created a "show your evidence" board in our rooms. I was going to just make a poster to put it in their binders, but then I saw her board and fell in love with it. Please ignore my mistake....it happens ALL the time, ha ha.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI-qghSli8drwG8geUXzQgepzA2oc49QrZ59HfnWba06AWKrEIKLBqHlTvVCsnBqi823-eyVxtOdEIWlvc_rV3mcGbhfTPjqfMGFsQKZHInLKlmB9o-Rr96osAqA4COCJ4kY3tJuLUrkE/s1600/IMG375.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI-qghSli8drwG8geUXzQgepzA2oc49QrZ59HfnWba06AWKrEIKLBqHlTvVCsnBqi823-eyVxtOdEIWlvc_rV3mcGbhfTPjqfMGFsQKZHInLKlmB9o-Rr96osAqA4COCJ4kY3tJuLUrkE/s400/IMG375.jpg" width="361" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
They can use this board to help them to put text evidence in their writing. Of course I am going to show them how first;) You can see where the kids and I have started using evidence to answer questions. Hopefully, they will be able to do it on their own soon.<br />
<br />
Next is using quotations to help support answers! I found a really neat "whole brain teaching" video of some 3rd graders finding quotations and stating them for the class. I can't wait to try this in my room!!!<br />
<br />

<br />
Okay...RTI morning stations....This has been bothering me for a little while now. I believe I told y'all in my last post that a team member and I was trying to come up with a schedule. Well, we did! Yay!!!! It's super easy and self explanatory.<br />

I am so greatful for a good class that tries so hard ;)<br />
<br />
These past few weeks have been so busy, I have not had time or even thought about taking pictures of what we have been doing. I could tell you all about it, but I won't bore you with the details without the pictures :)<br />
<br />
Thursday night was our first time to have "Teacher Talks" instead of a traditional Open House. It gave us a chance to talk to the parents about expectations and issues in the classroom. Also, parents were able to voice their opinions and ask questions. I loved it! I hope that the parents enjoyed it too. I think that this should be an annual thing.<br />
<br />
I was thinking that the parents would ask questions about our new reading program McGraw-Hill's Wonders, but I was wrong. There is SO MUCH stuff to teach whole group, I have YET to get to small groups!! Another team member and I were talking after school about how we could use our RTI time for reading stations and leveled readers. Then if we go to a 6 day reading rotation, it would give us time to pull small groups to discuss their leveled reader.<br />
<br />
<b>Any of you use Wonders???? How do you all make it work with whole group and small group in your reading block?? I have 90 minutes, but it isn't enough most days....</b><br />
<br />
The program is big on showing evidence. I think that I am going to "steal" an idea from a team member and make a "show your evidence" bulletin board as an aid. Once I get it together I will post pictures to show y'all.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06637075146953492793noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6958188705827233907.post-78917159618146879682013-09-02T16:06:00.001-05:002013-09-02T16:06:16.076-05:00Currently SeptemberIt's already September??? <b>Listening</b>: I love having the time to stay in my PJs all day and do nothing! Listening to the birds outside is just so relaxing! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Loving</b>: At the beginning of the year, I clean out my room and wanted to make my room a little bit more cheerful. Well, I came across this idea on Pinterest to use paper plates on my bulletin board. This was a great idea for my daily data. It gives it a nice finish that really brightened up my room, not to mention moving it to my daily data to the bulletin board helped too. Even my co-workers had to copy the idea! That is a huge deal since I am NOT a artsy-fartsy type person, ha ha ha. </div>

<b>Thinking</b>: As season begin to change, I want to try new recipes that reflect the change of seasons (weird, I know). I found two different gluten free/paleo recipe books that have some pretty good things in them. </div>

One of the books that I bought. Love it!</div>

<b>Wanting</b>: I want to be able to wear my sweaters! Plain and simple! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Needing</b>: Yes, I did mention needing to do Christmas shopping. My family lives in Michigan and I am actually going to visit "home" this year. This means that I can't wait until the last minute to ship their presents from Amazon this year (horrible, I know). What to get, what to get......</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Love Your Self</b>: This was really hard to come up with some things..I don't know why. I really need to try and start hiking every weekend in order to be ready for my Spain trip that is coming up in eight months. I have a pile of books that I haven't gotten to yet. They need to get read before I can buy any more. Since I have finished grad school, I have more time to focus on work. However, there is a problem...I have been staying after school until about 5 each night! Why?!?!? I get there about 5:15 in the morning as it is...I don't need to stay after school. I just can't convince myself to leave. </div>

They are so sweet. My boys are ALL boy, but that's okay with me...I can handle that. <br />
<br />
Over the week we have been doing various activities to get to know one another. Here are a few things that we did.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiojA_KQ-3TCRC5mWTYM2VHm-RJIZjzerB8SKSExESfau7mKP7VbLdnR-yDM_GcKOY2SbKQQZjX0c6yabwj_zF6LY3fPqGWQIX5MkO1EBfSgzWzeWzsQLRpveIIwvyz2M8Ch9ZLhyphenhyphenennGE/s1600/IMG365.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiojA_KQ-3TCRC5mWTYM2VHm-RJIZjzerB8SKSExESfau7mKP7VbLdnR-yDM_GcKOY2SbKQQZjX0c6yabwj_zF6LY3fPqGWQIX5MkO1EBfSgzWzeWzsQLRpveIIwvyz2M8Ch9ZLhyphenhyphenennGE/s320/IMG365.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We designed T-shirts to represent our interests. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7ElMjNIJCzJ_wKa8b4RXFClBuxr7Lns6mrawsR0cGvPT1Rs7XXhi8ooZlZWLD1L1KFXG2cR8oMMLWUeTeTUt2gJUBPGEjjDs1WbghcjqZPMYwaQ9hfe9ULO4gh0wEd5AdO4Uh0xpJpKs/s1600/IMG366.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7ElMjNIJCzJ_wKa8b4RXFClBuxr7Lns6mrawsR0cGvPT1Rs7XXhi8ooZlZWLD1L1KFXG2cR8oMMLWUeTeTUt2gJUBPGEjjDs1WbghcjqZPMYwaQ9hfe9ULO4gh0wEd5AdO4Uh0xpJpKs/s320/IMG366.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We completed a graphic organizer to tell about ourselves.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie2OysCNsBaQ-4j6tdsK85d8AQRpoxZHu-n02nGmRk_B04KQTjb80dxTb6XL6WHOrSTrlsY6DUFO1lFdULtNEQ4QJfNNw8BLzL89W1y3r3jSKPp0UmnYTa1ABBQ1zMdoLVkqlkSRbWNrw/s1600/IMG367.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie2OysCNsBaQ-4j6tdsK85d8AQRpoxZHu-n02nGmRk_B04KQTjb80dxTb6XL6WHOrSTrlsY6DUFO1lFdULtNEQ4QJfNNw8BLzL89W1y3r3jSKPp0UmnYTa1ABBQ1zMdoLVkqlkSRbWNrw/s320/IMG367.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We wrote numbers that told something about ourselves then drew pictures. It was so cute watching them explain their numbers to the class. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(Confession: This picture is from another 3rd grade room, I let my kiddos take their home, ha ha)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They had a chance to answer some questions about school. After those questions, they were able to ask me any two questions. Well, that was interesting. One of my favorites was asking me if I knew how to sing the "Star Spangled Banner". They tried to get me to sing it.</div>
<br />
<br />
On Thursday, I decided to have my students participate in a team building activity with spaghetti noodles and marshmallows. Thank you Pinterest for this great idea! The goal was to build the biggest tower as a group. In order to create a tall structure, they had to work as a team. It really should me who is a team player and who wasn't. They had a blast! They learned that working with as a team is very important to get things done. Lets just say there were groups that worked more as a team cleaning up than building their tower.<br />

I have been diligently trying to get my classroom together and plans together for the kiddos. They come trampling in on Monday, and I am NOT ready. I haven't gone to the school on a Saturday in a long time, but I had to go in order to be totally ready. It only took about 4 hours for me to have everything putting together. Other teachers came to work too, so I wasn't the only "loser" going to work on a "non-work" day :)<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
I did remember to take pictures for ya'll</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. I am a huge nerd! If it has to do with science, math, or literature, I am all about it. There are many times when my teacher friends just give me looks of confusion about things that I think are normal to know, ha ha. I was excited when I found my periodic element magnets at Target and my chemical name labels for my crayons. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. I love classic literature. When Barnes and Nobles runs a "buy 2, get one free" on their classic literature, I get super excited! How can someone not go into a bookstore without books anyway?? It's a mystery to me. Those free baskets at Second and Charles are frequently visited by me for those "how could you throw this away" books. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMQ3nQgD9Qal-gkAdTv9h4_8m_X1MF0t50tORzs0QvIZJQhrOHwLPjzg5E6CrRzjyqPYzby9qpaMkifhzwAZiOP9QIKWqEQPDqsyGH2x7RGAJhtlWMcLXA9g679NB9pyA2qaziqoBDH-A/s1600/bb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMQ3nQgD9Qal-gkAdTv9h4_8m_X1MF0t50tORzs0QvIZJQhrOHwLPjzg5E6CrRzjyqPYzby9qpaMkifhzwAZiOP9QIKWqEQPDqsyGH2x7RGAJhtlWMcLXA9g679NB9pyA2qaziqoBDH-A/s1600/bb.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Documentaries are awesome. Over half of my cue on Netflix is documentaries. I have watched everything from pieces about board games and diseases to historical events. It's amazing the amount of information that you can learn from one documentary. I did tell you that I'm a huge nerd. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. I love the smell of books. To walk into Second and Charles and take a deep breathe to smell the books is just wonderful. It just puts me in a good mood. One day, I hope that have a room filled with books to be able to capture that old book smell (well...maybe to read them too). Plus, just having a huge library like that is just plain impressive and cool. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. I love trying new dishes of food. I am all the time looking at sites for new recipes. There have been some failures, but there also has been a lot of successes too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. I hate painting my toe nails. I know that it's completely random, but I absolutely hate doing it. After I pain those toes, you never know when the next time you'll see them again with color. Also, I don't take it off either. Meaning that there could possibly be a dot of color on my big toe from a year ago. My co-workers have tried to get me to pain them, but it doesn't happen. It's just a big pain in the hinny!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
7. After living in the South for 15 years (wow, I can't believe that it's been that long), I still say "pop". There are just some things that you can't take out of a northern girl. None of my students have ever questioned me the meaning of "pop"...</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
8. I am deeply involved at my home church. Being a part of the family of God is just so wonderful! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
9. I am NOT a morning person. When I get up, I don't want anyone talking to me or even looking at me. It takes me a good while to wake up in the mornings. Maybe this is why I get to work so early....so I don't have to be bothered by those pesky perky morning people. </div>

Most of us teach elementary school, but that doesn't change the fact that we want to change children's lives. Here is an example of a teacher that lives this out. As we are getting ready to enter into a new school year, just keep this video in mind. Maybe it will inspire us to take the time to build those relationships with our students and do more than teach them academics. What kind of teacher are you going to be this year? I hope that I will be one that gives God glory every day in my classroom, showing the character of Christ to my students each day.<br />

This was my last semester of grad school! Now that I am FINISHED, I have time to work in my classroom and blog a little more. Also, I took a summer job at the Boys and Girls Club to help with their summer learning program. Who doesn't like a little extra cash??<br />
<br />
I was able to get into my classroom last week. YAY!! I want to start the year with a nice CLEAN room that is inviting to my kiddos. When I got into my room, I wasn't really prepared to see all my JUNK that I have been hoarding for years. Teachers are so bad about keeping things that they might use, which is really code for "I am just going to let this collect dust with my other piles of junk". Now I know that I am one of those people.<br />
<br />
Number 1 mission--clean out all the junk. It took me all week to get tons and tons of stuff that I haven't used in years out of my room. There were even things I never knew that I had that were stuff all over the place. I didn't think about taking a "before" picture, but believe me it was really, really messy. I'm not ready to put my "after" picture up yet since I do have a lot of work to do still. Maybe by Friday I will have everything together.<br />
<br />
Number 2 mission--decorate the room. This is not my strong suit, but I am going to try my best.<br />
<br />
I do have to say that if feels good to be back, ready to rock-n-rock with a new school year without having to do my own school work!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06637075146953492793noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6958188705827233907.post-63909889747251441732013-06-22T15:02:00.000-05:002013-06-22T15:02:29.352-05:00Remind 101--FREE ServiceI was perusing through my Pinterest account, and came across this text messaging service for teachers. It's called "Remind 101".<br />
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzBQJQddHT0dKDzzBxIBOCC6TKlTg-u1TV23alHsFf-MBcDDlsjL9qKUvNUa99FILR67SLhWmmiWq4BuwC2PuJM426-ynTruFa2pa9zZlVjExkauvmfIn613ywKS3vn3Y0TxWpGORYzZE/s1600/remind101+c.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzBQJQddHT0dKDzzBxIBOCC6TKlTg-u1TV23alHsFf-MBcDDlsjL9qKUvNUa99FILR67SLhWmmiWq4BuwC2PuJM426-ynTruFa2pa9zZlVjExkauvmfIn613ywKS3vn3Y0TxWpGORYzZE/s1600/remind101+c.png" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Do you mean that there is a way to send out a mass text message to my parents without giving them my cell phone number?!?! Yes there is!!!!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All you have to do is sign up and create a class name. Then you can have your parents sign up just like they would for texts from stores. There is a number to text and attach the tag line that connects to your account.</div>
<div>

<div>
Anytime that you have a message for parents, just go to the site (or the app on your phone), type up the message, and then send! They do not know your phone number but are able to get those reminders that are on those newsletters that they never read. You know what I'm talking about....you spend all that time creating a cute newsletter then it never gets home or gets put directly into the trash can.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Did I mention that you can attach this to your class blog?? You create a widget from the settings and place it anywhere on your blog. This way your parents not only get your text messages, but they are able to see the messages you send on the blog! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm SUPER excited about this!! I can't wait to use it in my classroom next year. Most of my parents could care less about newsletters or blogs, but I know that they will check their phones. Whoot Whoot!!</div>

It has been a great experience learning more about how to make writing and reading (specifically vocabulary instruction) more meaningful and fit into the Common Core.<br />
<br />
One of the discussions was about the lack of at home libraries of children from poverty or low-income homes. We all know that children in these circumstances have smaller vocabulary than children from higher social-economical homes. Some of this comes from the lack of reading at home. I know that there are other reasons too, but this is a problem that we can fix. The way that we can fix this is to build the child's at home library. We expect these children to read every night, but they don't have the books to do this. They might not have someone that can take them to the library; life is just about surviving, it's not about going to the library. So what can we do to build their libraries??? Well, we can get these books donated.<br />
<br />
I have included 2 different representations showing the importance of having students read EVERYDAY for 20-30 minutes.<br />

There is a point to all of this, I promise......<br />
<br />
I would LOVE to be able to have those of you in the blogging world to help me out here. Many of my students (not all, but many) do not have the books at home to become successful, to build their language and vocabulary. My goal this year is to be able to give EVERY student at least one book every 2 months, but I do need your guys' help! This blog might not be the most popular, most read, but I do know that teachers know how to get the word out even for tiny little blogs like mine! So yes, I am begging you to please help build students' at home library by sending books that you think little 3rd graders would love to read!!<br />
<br />
Just let leave me a comment with your email address if you are interested and I will get you the information that you need! I hope that you all will get the word out to help my little lovelies!!<br />

I've been having my nose to the grind trying to get finished with grad school, getting things ready for my summer job teaching reading/math, and helping out with my kid's camp. Oh, almost forgot....I have been trying to get my training for the El Camino de Santiago underway too (accomplished to hike 11.5 miles with a 15 pound pack!). Busy, busy, busy summer. It's only to get even busier.<br />
<br />
I figured that I link up with <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2013/06/june-currently.html" target="_blank">Oh' Boy 4th Grade</a>'s June Currently...it's been awhile. Gives me a nice break from doing grad assignments and icing my wrist from tendonitis.<br />

<u>Listening to those critters and bugs.</u>....I am one of those freaks that does not turn on the a/c until ABSOLUTELY necessary. That thing cost money! Plus there is an attic fan that I can turn on at night to cool the house down. It really does work!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u>Loving all of my goodies</u>....Things have been coming in the mail left and right! For one thing, I won a $100 gift card from Oriental Trading for Teacher Appreciation Week!! I got all sorts of stuff for my classroom. Some of the things I have been wanting for a while, but was too cheap to buy myself. Plus, there were things I still REFUSED to buy because they were too expensive. See...I am cheap with free money, ha ha ha ha. Everything else has been books for grad school, teaching units, and personal use. Who doesn't like getting package??? LOL.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u>Thinking about all the kiddos at camp.</u>...The A/G in Alabama have summer camp every year for kids and teens. Well, right now it's the kid's turn. So, I have been going to help the lovelies get registered. I am thinking about them constantly; hoping that they are growing in their relationship with the Lord. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u>Wanting to go on my trip</u>....I know that I have a little less than a year before I take on the El Camino de Santiago, but I would love to just start now! While I wait, a friend of my did recommend a book that a classmate of his wrote a few years back to help me get ready. Maybe I will get some time to read it over the summer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u>Needing to stop being so lazy</u>.....I was just telling my mother about how I have not moved from my little area in the living room today. Lazy hefer!!!!!! I know that I have been working away on some school assignments. But that is not excuse to stay in the same spot all day. I've got to get moving tomorrow!!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u>3 vacation essentials</u>.....1) a book--I love to read. No vacation is complete without a good book to get lost in. That leads into #2, a comfy chair. Love reading a book in a big comfy chair, one that I can just fall asleep in if I want. 3) Have to have a good beverage. I prefer good ol' H2O. It's my trusty friend that will always quench my thirst. </div>

We're going to be using McGraw-Hill's <i>Reading Wonders</i>. What do you all think about this series? What do you like or dislike about the series??<br />
<br />
From what I have seen of it, it seems really good. Although I am not liking shelving my "real books", there are some good things. One of my favorite things that I saw was the read aloud chapter books that come with each unit.<br />
<br />
I would love to hear what y'all have to say!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06637075146953492793noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6958188705827233907.post-12427597562041799792013-04-11T18:45:00.001-05:002013-04-11T18:45:37.424-05:00Stone Fox, Open House, and State TestingWe've been pretty busy trying to finish our <i>Stone Fox </i>book these past couple of weeks, but we got it done! Oh, how my students loved this book. I think it has been there favorite so far.<br />
<br />
***SPOILER ALERT....if you haven't read <i>Stone Fox</i> then you might want to scroll down a little bit****<br />
<br />
I had never read the book before, so on my spring break I took it home to read. I was shocked that Searchlight died! It was almost like when Luke Skywalker found out the Darth Vader was his father..."NNNNNOOOOO!!!!!!!!" However, when Stone Fox stopped the race allowing Little Willy to carry his dead dog over the finish line, I lost it!! There were tears involved. So when I had to read it to my students, I knew that I was going to have to hold it together--which I did, barely. The reaction of my students was priceless. They were so in to the story, so when Searchlight died it was the same reaction as I had! WOW! They were REALLY engaged in the story. I think they were more mad that the story didn't have an "ending". They had all sorts of questions about what was going to happen next. Did Willy get a new dog? What did Willy and Grandfather do now that he was well? Were Willy and Stone Fox friends? This led them to writing the next chapter of <i>Stone Fox</i>.<br />
<br />
****OKAY....it's okay to read now...spoiler alert is over*****<br />
<br />
Next, we are reading <i>Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger</i>. This out to be interesting. I haven't seen my kids so excited about reading in a long time. So thankful that my principal gave my team the "go ahead" on using REAL books! The little ones are constantly asking about what we are going to read next. Even if they do not care for the current book itself, they are still excited about what the next story will be. That makes my heart get warm fuzzies!<br />
<br />
Okay, next week is an open house during school hours for an entire week! We are trying to give parents a chance to see what goes on in our classrooms during math and reading. Since our school has gone to using Investigations math material, some of the parents started to worry about this "new" math. This is a great way to for them to get a glimpse into our math world, see how making math fun can help students learn, and how we are allowing students to use their own strategies for solving equations (not just using the ONE way the uses one the board). Maybe it will help them see that I have to take care of other children's needs too, if you know what I mean. So far I only have one parent that is coming. Maybe there will be others. Our school already had math and reading sessions one evening a little while ago, so that could be for the low response. I will let y'all know how it goes.<br />
<br />
State testing is just around that corner--in 3 weeks to be exact!! Where did the time go?!?! Our preparations have been underway since the beginning of the month. We have to get our opened responses a little more refined. Lots of reviewing going on here. I have been thinking about what I can do for my students to get them pumped up about doing well on this test. There were some really cute ideas on Pinterest (of course, isn't that were we get every idea nowadays, ha ha ha) that I might try. For example, I saw some cards with cute messages that matches different types of candy. Also, last year I had parents write a letter of encouragement to their child which was given to them the morning of the first day of testing. Those kiddos read their letters every day, aaaawwww. I might do it again. I would love to hear your ideas!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06637075146953492793noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6958188705827233907.post-75274785896001348422013-03-15T22:44:00.004-05:002013-03-15T22:44:57.731-05:00It's All About Weather<div style="text-align: center;">
It's spring break!!! I've made it!!!!!</div>
<br />
I love, love teaching our weather unit. It's not the fanciest thing in the world, but I love seeing my students get so involved with each lesson. There is always the black-hole of never ending questions. No way can they all be answered. Every once in a while, I am able to get the kiddos to find out the answers on their own. This is a rarity, but it does happen.<br />
<br />
Like any good teacher try to keep her students entertained, we have a couple of songs that we use to help our lovelies remember the water cycle and the types of clouds. The water cycle song is something one of my team members remembers from when she was in 3rd grade, and the cloud song was composed by an old 3rd grade team member.<br />
<u><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: blue;"><br /></span></u>
<br />

<u><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: blue;">Water Cycle Song</span></u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(To the tune of "She's Comin' Around the Mountain", and there are hand motions for each part)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Water travels in a cycle, yes it does<br />
Water travels in a cycle, yes it does<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Water goes up as evaporation (hands rise)</div>
It forms clouds as condensation (Hands clap without touching)<br />
Falls down as precipitation (Hands make come down like rain)<br />
Yes it does.<br />
Water Cycle! (Fist pump in the air)<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: blue;"><u>Cloud Song</u></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(Well...it's more like a rap)<br />
Clouds, clouds, amazing clouds<br />
Cumulus clouds are fluffy and white<br />
Could mean good weather<br />
It might! It might!<br />
Clouds, clouds, amazing clouds.<br />
Stratus cloud are low and grey<br />
It might mean that rain is coming today<br />
Clouds, clouds, amazing clouds<br />
Cirrus clouds are wispy and high<br />
This means it's nice and we'll play outside<br />
Clouds, clouds, amazing clouds<br />
Watch out for cumulonimbus clouds<br />
Their thunder and lightening make a big<br />
Boom-pow!<br />
Clouds, clouds, amazing clouds</div>

I can't believe that it's that time of year....time to get down and dirty preparing for the ARMT+ (Alabama Reading and Math Test)! Where has the year gone??? I know that I couldn't tell you.<br />
<br />
I have put my students into those boring, dreaded, hated "military rows" trying to get my students into the right frame of mind.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcDcQP_zl-9uHpjHJjx8pYU71eA-uLcm8cWS-0UXlAICQwapcVGzlw-DFsx-KbAvNNTtw2TOOHOGb4fW7aRR7bcBecSsz0bWX7N3mR8dQMRUj8pdB5bXyIiktawv9_bP8MKUKvJZLCB4o/s1600/IMG158.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcDcQP_zl-9uHpjHJjx8pYU71eA-uLcm8cWS-0UXlAICQwapcVGzlw-DFsx-KbAvNNTtw2TOOHOGb4fW7aRR7bcBecSsz0bWX7N3mR8dQMRUj8pdB5bXyIiktawv9_bP8MKUKvJZLCB4o/s320/IMG158.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Oh how I hate this set up! It drives me CRAZY!!! I don't know how teachers did it years ago putting students in rows. There is no where to move and it makes it harder for group work!<br />
<br />
Today is nothing but mock ARMT+ tests. After our students take these tests, we analyze them to see where their strengths and weaknesses are. From there we are able to group them according to like weaknesses and target those areas in small group interventions. In the past it really helped our students. So, hopefully it will do the same this year.<br />
<br />
Math is our biggest concern since the change to the Common Core Standards or College and Career Readiness Standards here is Alabama and a change in our math curriculum. I don't understand how a state can change the state test and our county adopts a math program that doesn't cover the needed standards.<br />
<br />
Is your school getting ready for testing yet???<br />
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06637075146953492793noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6958188705827233907.post-33954044401311118202013-03-08T19:56:00.001-06:002013-03-12T12:49:58.404-05:00From Teacher to PilgrimI believe that I have told y'all before about my trip, more like pilgrimage, to take on the Camino de Santiago. Well, I have decided to start a blog about my adventures. Just in case you all want to follow along with me. I was told be my one of my friends that I needed to start a blog about me getting ready and the actual trip, so I caved in and did it. Just click on the picture for the link ;)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://fromteachertopilgrim.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="131" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwfog5SM4FDyK5Vkq750cgmEpXkmR-obNYbIwJV-wCslILEWE1NBz8FUckgpW1bGWCZQxQpQcXA_PswT3ACw-RNV1HHkoYfLerA3l7Q_3sVRPDkVwJvtUv9k1oxoHJ1D_gFZkWi-l6-IM/s200/camino-map1.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Just in case you all don't know what this trip is all about--it's an OLD pilgrimage starting in Saint Jean Pied de Port, France to Santiago, Spain. Saint James was said to have gone on this pilgrimage. People will travel this for many reasons, but a majority of the time the reasons are religious. The trip will take about 35 days which means I will have to walk/hike about 15 to 20 miles a day.<br />

I just can't believe that it's almost the end of the school year! Where has the time gone? The 4th quarter has just started, so it won't be long before we are testing, take up text books, and have field day. In the mist of all this excitement, I am in the middle of planning a trip of a life time! I am sure that you all are wondering what we have been doing these past few weeks. Let me tell you.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipb-ofVFRbI5DZMZaJcz74UvhpbarxT9Bf8H5ExFtsNGKS6tslEeYw8C_XUuDvVRj1YR0ulWa6oZC89lHVQMKd7bk0zLJQoxS9gVwCn2o9pJrQtEBhut3EwrcmXfbqDb6KWV6FMKCGCAw/s1600/chcolatekids2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="143" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipb-ofVFRbI5DZMZaJcz74UvhpbarxT9Bf8H5ExFtsNGKS6tslEeYw8C_XUuDvVRj1YR0ulWa6oZC89lHVQMKd7bk0zLJQoxS9gVwCn2o9pJrQtEBhut3EwrcmXfbqDb6KWV6FMKCGCAw/s320/chcolatekids2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We have been slaving away at our book <i>Chocolate Touch</i> by Patrick Skene Catling.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHKkcbUO6e1aG7COpDlMTAEfA5plT9zb1-pwwFwsF5JRklyP6eOdLBWw_dR6XgW2mwLIwpHY37HGYBGuz-OL2Zt7WCj3B8AACkPfTy_VFYbLDDyvH1YZWq7QYkzsvfU7bIXQc80kwhROU/s1600/CT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHKkcbUO6e1aG7COpDlMTAEfA5plT9zb1-pwwFwsF5JRklyP6eOdLBWw_dR6XgW2mwLIwpHY37HGYBGuz-OL2Zt7WCj3B8AACkPfTy_VFYbLDDyvH1YZWq7QYkzsvfU7bIXQc80kwhROU/s320/CT.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
It's a story about a boy, John Midas, who is greedy and selfish. He desires chocolate more than any thing else. John finds a mysterious coin and buys a box of chocolate. This is where the trouble begins. Everything that he touches turns into chocolate. This could spell trouble or it could be the "touch" of a lifetime.<br />
<br />
<u>Week 1: </u><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
We looked at the copy write date and compared 1952 to 2013.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKOAv8GKIBKW-R1NjxDAO00V9AZEKr7S44Mc-gz436r5-9dR2aohhRECk8pOv0vA1cKwnBTVJNSXH9zblWu3u0hnYLNRo0j6QfoRTnu0w4r9tEoe_nHfSOgYGro0trBJTMit5zqLPny-0/s1600/IMG149.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKOAv8GKIBKW-R1NjxDAO00V9AZEKr7S44Mc-gz436r5-9dR2aohhRECk8pOv0vA1cKwnBTVJNSXH9zblWu3u0hnYLNRo0j6QfoRTnu0w4r9tEoe_nHfSOgYGro0trBJTMit5zqLPny-0/s320/IMG149.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div>
They LOVE seeing how things were different, especially when they get to see how much things cost back then compared to now. My lovelies scramble to find the food that they like and see how much they could have bought it for in 1952. I always hate having to stop them to move on, but if I don't then we'll get nothing else done.<br />
<br />
<div>
"What is greed?"--This was the question that I had them ask themselves. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF1gP4dRvsglxrWYz_Yxq0iX-3eB7DNVCpEr66kIGb2f6bBkVsR8fsno4Sb5v8Gny9MkzYt_CS3o101btBZ9dlBc8bOZ6QuJtTauYkdSQdn_DZNWjqS4JqJlizyKB1ljJIwq1Wv8cjRKs/s1600/IMG145.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF1gP4dRvsglxrWYz_Yxq0iX-3eB7DNVCpEr66kIGb2f6bBkVsR8fsno4Sb5v8Gny9MkzYt_CS3o101btBZ9dlBc8bOZ6QuJtTauYkdSQdn_DZNWjqS4JqJlizyKB1ljJIwq1Wv8cjRKs/s320/IMG145.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div>
They wrote their answer on a sticky note and placed it one the chart paper. They had some pretty good ideas about it too.</div>
<div>
<br />
In order to get ready for our book, I read them the story of King Midas and his "golden touch". They LOVED this story! This did give me hope that they would love <i>Chocolate Touch</i>, but I was wrong. Some of my kiddos didn't like it surprisingly. All well, you can't win them all I guess.</div>
<div>
We read half of our book doing character analysis along the way and trying to find out what was going to happen. In order to help my students with comprehension I allowed them to name each chapter keeping the main idea of each chapter in mind, and I had them create 4 visualizations about their favorite parts. We have talked a lot about visualizations and how they help us understand what we are reading. When we can see it in our minds, we have better idea what is going on in the story and it makes the story more real. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBSPuNB0q-7Uvyqbrg77F1wFDporJ5m1OBY4QEQUyM-_KtAZLjADEJqFz_uh76dCnPlLlsib3E_MmibbtPC2Ux6tTMuizO2s9lbs60q7HVHIhLcnOfJopTvL2P58KJrbrYRQprECubzSQ/s1600/IMG157.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBSPuNB0q-7Uvyqbrg77F1wFDporJ5m1OBY4QEQUyM-_KtAZLjADEJqFz_uh76dCnPlLlsib3E_MmibbtPC2Ux6tTMuizO2s9lbs60q7HVHIhLcnOfJopTvL2P58KJrbrYRQprECubzSQ/s320/IMG157.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9cnUySsyeNSO0uSJEyMAsJA4eZxKcotJ-XbbqTJvxcwSEc9ZPCfA_rRIdKruGNkAWK-8-RanA2z-e0NzsGUea8yoW6k6wO3l7Q0duWx5xxO4LRH8cW4I-OtC-Isee2HG4OnfFxmgbQcw/s1600/IMG151.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9cnUySsyeNSO0uSJEyMAsJA4eZxKcotJ-XbbqTJvxcwSEc9ZPCfA_rRIdKruGNkAWK-8-RanA2z-e0NzsGUea8yoW6k6wO3l7Q0duWx5xxO4LRH8cW4I-OtC-Isee2HG4OnfFxmgbQcw/s320/IMG151.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
<ul>
</ul>
<div>
<u>Week 2:</u></div>
<div>
We finished the other half of our book in our second week. Many of my students talked about things that they would love to be able to eat all the time until we got to the end of the story. Ha ha ha. By the time we got to the end, my students created <u style="font-weight: bold;">many</u> text-to-text connections on their own. Here are a few:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>The Dr. Cranium was just like the doctor from <i>Charlotte's Web</i>. Whenever the parents are worried about their kids then takes them to the doctor, nothing happens. The doctors never seemed to help the kids ever!</li>
<li>The shopkeeper was just like Mr. Wonka from <i>Charlie and the Chocolate Factory</i>. Both of them worked in a place with chocolate and were trying to teach children a lesson about greed and selfishness. </li>
<li>John Midas was just like King Midas. The kids made this connection before I was able to start our comparison with these two stories. They saw that both characters had a greed problem even though they looked a little different.</li>
</ul>
<div>
Dr. Cranium give John Midas an Elixir to help try to help him eat better, so I had my students create their own Elixirs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxLm1_CaawHRQws52m2NpQTXdl7J5gKhfEQaZ61AypWOCamLyuf_JDRjZZL9LtgC3mvlj3d0t06kOnqaZXtiiKQtU0f_D2JPLsRThTY_1h5zY5T1QskBX9LsrqwFA2BMUXLKkQtk_58UY/s1600/IMG156.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxLm1_CaawHRQws52m2NpQTXdl7J5gKhfEQaZ61AypWOCamLyuf_JDRjZZL9LtgC3mvlj3d0t06kOnqaZXtiiKQtU0f_D2JPLsRThTY_1h5zY5T1QskBX9LsrqwFA2BMUXLKkQtk_58UY/s320/IMG156.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPQETVYGo4L-4Qy1U4LugSRX26WdfwT9TiQhDnrOalHgpnC2vsQIJCsELN8ivxqQXFfKHWfkv5eb5gU4oN53le-xdrCjrgAdals_inM5lXcHCLfbM6HsdkbIBje9FXQzPDWFkihjzytMs/s1600/IMG154.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPQETVYGo4L-4Qy1U4LugSRX26WdfwT9TiQhDnrOalHgpnC2vsQIJCsELN8ivxqQXFfKHWfkv5eb5gU4oN53le-xdrCjrgAdals_inM5lXcHCLfbM6HsdkbIBje9FXQzPDWFkihjzytMs/s320/IMG154.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Once we were done reading our book, I had the kiddos compare King Midas to <i>Chocolate Touch</i> (a little more deeply than their previous connections) with their tables. After a few minutes, we came back together and made a Venn Diagram to display our thinking.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbTOaIIqFsMWWjMmYrH0ACBiADJxS97MqgrE3OLbYeEITt1IbitiwbNhg9GXBRsBWTK7MQp4mHOqNWQZX9SDw4CWY5uURbpieNxjB1M4S1Se86Ph2f6-OSaskbr69zKZicCdz53sQbl9U/s1600/IMG153.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbTOaIIqFsMWWjMmYrH0ACBiADJxS97MqgrE3OLbYeEITt1IbitiwbNhg9GXBRsBWTK7MQp4mHOqNWQZX9SDw4CWY5uURbpieNxjB1M4S1Se86Ph2f6-OSaskbr69zKZicCdz53sQbl9U/s320/IMG153.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Since we discussed the theme of "wants and needs", "greed", and "selfishness", I thought that it was a good idea for us to make a chart paper that made us think about things that we need and want. There were different types of people wishing for different things and we had to determine if it was a "want" or a "need". Everything was going okay until it got to a 3rd grader wishing for a vacation, LOL. of course they felt that it was a NEED even though we discussed that one a length. All well, ha ha ha. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
